I get a kick out of some of the things that spammers leave as Comments in hopes that you’ll provide them with a link back to their site. I’ve posted a few of the newer ones that I’ve received.
Spammers forget about two things: 1) Most smart bloggers don’t allow comments to be posted without moderation, and 2) Akismet, the spam-busting widget.
In response to the Security Awareness Tips post, I received these blurbs:
- Finally, an issue that I am passionate about. I have looked for information of this caliber for the last several hours. Your site is greatly appreciated.
- The data that a nanny cam can return you is priceless. Hidden surveillance for a particular region in your dwelling to catch someone who is stealing from you – According to law you cannot arrest someone for stealing established exclusively on suspicion. Somebody either needs to witness the criminal offense or you must get them on video during their illicit act.
After reading so many of these “Comments,” I get the feeling that they follow a script or pick their comments out of a long list of suggested flattery items. Do they really think people are that stupid?
It must work because you sure get a lot of them, and I’d think they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t get something for it. But you’d think they pass on a blog about audit and information security, right?
If they were truly smart, they’d disagree about something, and that might generate more interest and make more people read their comments. But to disagree, you have to understand what the post is about, and spammers aren’t paid to read and understand, they are paid to spam.
Paid to be stupid. What a concept!
Question: Do spammers spam posts about spammers spamming? Stay tuned.
— Update 1
I got my answer – yes. Perhaps it was a jokester, perhaps it’s real spam, but this comment was left on this very post about spam:
- As much as I can understand right now, I think you’re right!
Because this blurb makes little sense and is not the best sentence construction (which is typical), I think it’s legit spam (another interesting phrase).
From other reading I’ve done on the blog spammer subject, automated tools exist to leave these comments. Great – automated stupidity. What a even stranger concept.
Update 2 —
I found another blogger who published some spam comments he received.
Update 3 — 8/7/10
This is definitely the most creative one I’ve ever had posted to this blog:
- I’m currently being held prisoner by the Russian mafia <deleted link> and being forced to post spam comments on blogs and forum! If you don’t approve this they will kill me. <deleted link>
This comment sat in my spam filter for a week before I found it, so there’s one less spammer in this world, and it’s not even my fault!
Update 4– 2/3/11
The latest spam comment on my About page of all places, which solves no problems…
This really answered my problem, thank you!
Either these people are MUCH stupider than I thought, or the bots they write to do this for them are as dumb as they are.
