WordPress Hacked, Attackers Gain Root

On 4/13/11, WordPress announced it suffered a root-level hack of their servers and that “anything on those servers could have been revealed.”

Nothing is said about WHEN the hack occurred. From experience, I can tell you that you generally don’t announce a security incident until you’ve investigated it thoroughly, and that can take at least a day, sometimes more, depending on whether you have experts in-house or can get them in a hurry.

This attack directly affects only blogs or accounts hosted by WordPress (in other words, your blog URL ends with “wordpress.com”. If you host your own WordPress blog, you are indirectly affected. How? Since WordPress source code may have been compromised, attackers may be combing through it to find vulnerabilities that will allow them to attack any blog running WordPress, regardless of where it’s hosted.

If you have a blog or account that is hosted at wordpress.com, at least do the following immediately:

Blog Theme Changes Coming (I think)

I just noticed this alert in my blog admin console:

Howdy! Your current theme, PressRow, will soon be retired and your site will be upgraded to a brand new theme, Pilcrow. For more information on the switch, please read this announcement: Details on PressRow replacement, Pilcrow.

If you want to try out the cool new features in Pilcrow before then just header over to Appearance→Themes and activate Pilcrow—or check out any one of the other fantastic themes we’ve been adding lately.

I like PressRow, but I previewed how the blog would look with this new theme. Although others are complaining about changes, I didn’t see how this would change my blog. So why bring it up?

Blogging: Use the MORE tag

If you have a WordPress blog (or any blog) and don’t use the MORE tag in all your posts, you’re missing more than you think.

Every once in a while I feel like blogging about blogging…

The MORE tag ensures that only a few lines or paragraphs of a post appear on your home page (how much depends on where YOU put the tag). To read the rest of the post, the reader clicks “Continue reading” or whatever phrase your particular theme uses (my theme uses “Keep reading” by default but I changed it, as you can see here on my home page).
